Simple ways the body communicates with us

Do you know that at every point in our lives the body always sends information to us? . The body hums, vibrates and sends information to us continuously, at every moment in time. After eating it tells us something, after been drenched in the rain the body relates to you about how it feels, even  after a long and restful sleep the body makes us aware about how it feels. The body speaks to us continuously every time of the day, it calls to us after each and every action we perform.

Effective communication is usually a two way system, someone talks and the other party listens and respond accordingly. As human we find it difficult to heed  listen or even respond to our body  methods of communication, we see them as trivial or part of our normal day stress. We overlook them or better still we say, these shall soon pass away.

I guess the question on your mind would be how does the body communicate? does it send impulses to our brain which  registers on the mind as  sub lingual messages? or does the communication happens in the dream?.  Naaaaa far from this scenario. Our body communicates  through various feelings we feel during  the day. This feelings ranges from headache, tiredness , bloatedness, nausea, pains  aches, feverish conditions and plenty others.

All these are sicknesses now…… someone maybe saying, but no they are not. They all are symptoms caused by an underlining action that wasn’t favorable or agreeable with the body system. Hence the body tries to communicate with us through the production of such symptoms. Sadly we treat the symptoms and most often we forget to deal with the real cause.

For example when we come down with body pains and aches, we easily treat the pain by taking analgesics and pain medications. The pains go away after some days, merrily we carry on with our normal activities thinking that all is alright. Far from it, the truth is that the pains we feel is the body way of telling us that we are engaging in activities that are not favorable or harmful to the body. That back ache may be as a result of bad sitting posture or a strenuous exercise. The body is trying to tell to us with that pain that it doesn’t want us to continue with that particular activity and expects us to stop it. What about the case of indigestion or bloated feeling, it just means that the particular food eaten just before the indigestion sets in doesn’t go well with the body system or the food was eaten in a hurried manner. This same situation applies to all complaints we have about the body, those complaints are often triggered by something wrong we either have done or are still doing. Cold and feverish conditions caused by malaria would be treated with antimalarial drugs, but we avoid dealing with the main issue that is the causative agent of malaria plasmodium falciparium(mosquito). So many others scenarios occur when we engage in or part of activities that the body is not in support of. Most often often after series of complaints from the body, the body breaks down when its unable to cope with such conditions of service. These are what eventually leads to  full blow out disease conditions  such as hypertension, diabetes, stomach ulcer, hemorrhoids and so many others.

A major key to living healthy is paying keen attention to our body state at all times. As you may notice i used the word keen, that means the body watch should not be done haphazardly or with a carefree attitude. Our body check should be a continuous careful, regular and judicious activity which should be done at all times. Especially as we start approaching middle age.  Paying keen attention to the body involves a vital ability of being able to recall information. Recalling of past activities indulge in over a period of time, say  a minimum of 24hours to 1 week is very needful and important in listening to our body needs.

The trick is this if your body presents with an unwanted symptom, take a chill pill and recall all previous activities done within few hours and then analyse them carefully. Try to figure out what might have triggered the unpleasant feeling and then make the appropriate lifestyle modification. If during the recall process the actual cause of the unpleasantness cannot be pin pointed out, then its time to talk the doctor or a health practitioner who would be in a better position to help you out.

Lets make a decision to be actively conscious of our body all day  long, therein lies the ability to make healthy choices.

Mr somebody was a young handsome lad, who grew up in normal household with normal every day struggles ranging from lack of money to health issues and the constant lack of power episodes. Mr somebody grew from childhood to teenage years and whenever he was asked what is your greatest ambition?  with a cheeky grin he would always reply, i would go to school, get a good job, work hard, get plenty money and live happily ever said mr somebody.

Hi Mr somebody i am the consultant endocrinologist your case file has been transferred to me because you have been diagnosed with diabetes mellitus type 2.  Severe dehydration, frequent urination and unexplained weight loss finally drove Mr somebody to go for a medical check up for the first in years. How manage?  why,  am just 38 why should i be burdened with this illness? were the questions and emotions that barrage him. Questions he had no clue to, what did i do wrong? am at the peak of my life,  i have plans that i still need to carry on with, where the numerous thoughts of him. It was a saddened Mr somebody that got home to his family that day.

Five years later, Mr somebody i am sorry to tell you that the cause of your frequent headaches and insomnia are all due to your persistent elevated blood pressure, am afraid you  are now hypertensive and you are going to be placed on medications that will help lower your blood pressure the doctor told Mr somebody.

Years later, a frustrated  Mr somebody stared at the numerous pills in his hands. From just a single pill to treat the diabetes mellitus it had steadily increased to include anti hypertensive drugs, presently he takes nothing less than seven medications and in cases where he had to be treated for arthritic pains and common cold the medication usually increases up to 10 pills. This was not what Mr somebody envisioned for his older age.

Am sure this is a story every one can relate with. Every where we turn to we  are surrounded with elderly loved ones who are placed on lifelong medications. They grumble and complain bitterly about how much medications they  take just to keep going. This common scenario can actually be changed, we don’t have to  make the same mistakes our parents made concerning their health lives. We should start taking active control of our health. We all have dreams about what we want to achieve in our finances, careers, our spiritual work with God and plenty other things. We tend to always forget a very crucial aspect, our health. We forget that with a good health life that’s when we are truly wealthy, we forget that its the  healthy individual that can truly enjoy the reward of his or her hard work later in life. We do  treat our health life with a lackadaisical approach and that is TOTALLY WRONG AND UNWISE.

Lets make deliberate decisions now that will produce good results in our health life now.Its very possible to enjoy older age in good health without restrictions and also achievable. The real issue is are we ready to make such changes? lets answer truthfully.

Bring the vegetables game ON

The 22nd of April was named world earth day. It was so named to preserve the cocoon which we all are in. This cocoon known as earth continues to shields us from lot of harmful elements and substances which can range from the sun rays, metoroids, UFOS(insert smileys) and many others.

Any way, one beautiful gift that the earth has continually given to us from the earliest of time is vegetation. The gift of vegetation is one of the most important and treasured gift to us mankind. Imagine the trees, the flowers shrubs that make our environment beautiful not only to the eyes but also to the soul. The mere sight of a beautifully arranged bouquet can bring life to one’s spirits and bring lovely smiles to a tired soul. That and many more are the gifts that earth offers to us.

Heath and vegetation are two similar words so inter twined together that in most cases the successes in the health world is hinged on many discoveries from vegetation. Ranging from drugs that the pharmaceutical industry produces to the food we eat every day they all are derived majorly from vegetation.

Today’s post will be dwelling much on why as individuals we don’t take vegetables as much as necessary. Every body am sure at one time or the other have heard or read about the importance of vegetables. The real issue here is that with the amount of information known about vegetables do we really take them as required by our body. Alot of us can list off head the numerous benefits of taking vegetables, but when asked about the last time they ate vegetables you get a blank stare from them.

I have tried to come up with some reasons why we don’t eat enough vegetables and also offer some possible solutions. So lets go .

  1. fruits are not appealingly to the taste buds. The day i heard this statement i was like huh are you serious? my friend was like yes now you cant compare the taste of a well prepared pot of soup with something like concumber and watermelon. I just shook my head my with pity and explained to him that the most tasty dishes are fruits and vegetables ranging from the succulent juice found in mangoes to the rich taste of sour sop and plenty others. Please let remove the notion from our minds that fruits are not rich in taste, infact they are the ideal and right flavors that our taste buds need at all times.
  2. They are expensive and not always available. This one always makes me laugh, like the phone you are carrying are much does it cost? What about the cost of treating a disease condition. Those are the real expensive not the money use in buying fruits. As concerning availability if we can wait go from one end of the town to the other for a wedding party or a celebration. Going such lengths to get vegetables should not be a big bother.
  3. Vegetable and fruits gets bad quickly and easily. Sadly this is one drawback that is very true concerning fruits, they rot easily. We can always find a way around this drawback by storing them in appropriate storage conditions. We can go the extra lengths by buying fruits that are unripe so they can ripen at home, we can store in the fridges, but with our epileptic light supply this can be  a challenge though. The best method for storing green leafy vegetables should be in a dry environment free from moist, water and even dew. Leafy vegetables can stay for up to a week in a dry environment. Juicing of very ripe fruits is also a very good way of avoiding wastage, juice the fruits and freeze. Saves you much.

This is just the beginning of our plenty gist’s about vegetables. As time goes on we will continue talking about vegetables, vegetables and more vegetables

Imagine Me

During one of my daily squat exercises  i kind of….. gave up,

Not  literary giving up, like giving up the ghost or falling dead. I wanted to give up on exercises, on keeping fit or even eating healthy. I wanted out, i wanted to go and sleep, i wanted to go and eat voraciously, i wanted to give into my cravings. But within a few minutes of me wanting to give up, something spectacular happened. The  thought of giving up stopped immediately when i imagined myself becoming obese and placed on medications.

In fact the idea disappeared vamoose within a Milli seconds. What struck me then and there was the power of my imaginative thoughts. I only just imagined the possible consequences of my actions and that alone was capable of making me correct my steps.

This just shows how much strength we can derive from what our imagination shows us.

So before you take that second helping of creamy chocolate bars, imagine what would happen to your waist lines, how possibly wide it would become. I tell you  with lightening speed the chocolate bars would be dropped. Our imaginative power can give us the powerful motivation or push that we require to live a healthy life. It can help us drop and stay away from harmful habits, it can help us seek help when necessary, it can help us go the extra mile in achieving our health goals. With healthy imaginations, healthy lifestyle goals can be formed developed, sustained and adhered to.

The challenge here is are we ready to use our imaginations to our health benefits. Before embanking on any action, especially those that can play a huge role in your health life  always try and  imagine the health consequences. Are the aftermath effect beneficial to my health? would the consequence affect my income due to its health costs? are my hospital visits going to become more frequent because of the corresponding effects?. All these are what you should carefully, truthfully answer and imagine. This should be the basis of whether you carry out the actions or not.

I want to be healthy and fit every day. Do you also want to be healthy and fit? if yes,put on your thinking cap. What are my normal every day habits? are they beneficial to me? would their long term effects affect me positively or adversely. All these are questions we should give answers to truthfully. If  from the answers we deduce that the aftermath effects are not favorable, then as a necessity we must  mentally and physically start the delete processes. Delete those bad habits from our mindset and start the process of deleting them gradually from our everyday habits. Lets kick start the day with an imagination of the the type of health life we want to achieve, note the habits you need to cultivate to have that amaaazing life and body. I tell you the result will be that we will become so fired up and motivated to start up the day with exercises, keeping a balanced eating habits and zealous about being health. I always say the choice is ours.

I can be healthy, you can be healthy we all will be healthy.

A stitch in time

I recently talked to a patient who came to the pharmacy to collect her medications and she was bemoaning her fate. How come i am diabetic? nobody in my family has diabetics, ehn so i will be on drugs for the rest of my life?. Her countenance was that of disbelief, shock and pain. Well after series of counseling and also visits to the diabetic care educator she grudgingly accepted her condition and planned to manage it properly.

The initial reaction of this lady is a common scenario when many people are diagnosed with chronic conditions. They ask how come?  but its not in my family now? or worst case scenario they blame it on witches and wizard? (religious beliefs). We forget that that little things we had taken for granted over a long period had built up and manifested as chronic illness. A stitch immediately done on our sugar intake can cut down the occurrence of diabetics mellitus with about 70%. What about consistent exercise, and regular routine check up. All these are the stitches we have to keep doing continuously and consistently.

In fact we should be more proactive about our health  than been just been passive about it. Passivity makes us prone to any situation or occurrence. These situations usually throws us off balance emotionally, psychologically and even financially. On the other hand when we are more proactive about our health life, things do not come as a shock to us. We are already conscious of our health status, We do frequent checkups, we are already informed about markers that could predispose us to any chronic illness. Acting in a proactive manner concerning our health makes us alert, careful, observant and it gives us the power to make healthy choices.

I hate to be unaware about things or taken off balance about situations especially concerning my health and i guess so do you.

Over the next couple of weeks we would be looking at these individual stitches we can keep making, in our goal to becoming  a more healthier individual.

I reiterate the choice is ours.

Hi every one today is world tuberculosis day. Its a day every one is reminded that a disease called TB exist and as the theme of this year TB day is “UNITE TO END TB” we shall be looking at the various roles we can individually play to end TB. Am not going to be saying much about the history of TB, its signs and symptoms as all these are available on WHO publication online.

Lets start with how TB affects us as individuals. The most common occurrence of mycobacterium tuberculosis is in its inactive phase and many people are carriers of this inactive form which can be very much transmittable.

Yes very much transmittable. Am at risk, you also are at risk and our children, family and loved ones are also at risk.

We must unite to fight and end TB. It is very much possible and attainable

Firstly we must all get vaccinated with the BCG vaccine against tuberculosis and the beautiful thing about this vaccine is that is free yes very free. Our government has made it possible for us to get vaccinated at apparently no cost from our end. We have no excuse to get vaccinated, visit one  of the primary health centers nearby to get vaccinated especially every one in developing countries.

Get informed about TB. Be a part of the local TB control program in the community so that timely information, guidelines and control strategies will be passed directly to you. knowledge is power. The more you know concerning a situation  the easier it is to win over the situation. Lets make sure that our knowledge base about TB is regularly updated.

Health care providers must always assume anyone is a suspect unless proven otherwise. We should always put adequate precautionary measures in place whenever we are attending to  patients.

Lets always adhere to medications prescriptions. One of the major challenges in the fight against TB is the rise in multi drug resistant tuberculosis, due to a number of factors.Lets not always do things that are convenient for us, we should always think about the repercussions of our actions on others, especially our family and friends. Adhere to your medications.

Maintain  good ventilation in the homes always, avoid overcrowding in the house and also crowded places with  poor ventilation. This will reduce the chances of contacting air borne infections.

Finally  eat healthy, keep fit maintain a balanced overall well being,we should never dare compromise our immunity with harmful substances. The body’s natural immunity is and always will be the best method in fighting tuberculosis.

Cheers to the healthy Life. Peace

My plans 1

There is a popular saying that goes the best way to predict your future is to create it. Most of us apply this saying  to our financial lives, relationship lives and all other aspects, leaving out a crucial aspect of our well being,  our health.

To have an healthy life in our middle and older age is actually to create it. We can  predict up to 80% of what will happen in our older age health wise when we plan carefully ahead.

Lets pause, inhale…….. and think deeply, reflect on our current behaviors and life style habits and also try to visualize the future outcomes. Are those outcomes  presentable or  filled with gloom, pot bellies and plenty of medications? its time to  get up andstart  making healthy designs that will give us healthy outcomes that not only satisfies me, you but also gives us peace of mind.

We either plan to succeed or we plan to fail. Yes  many of us by doing nothing actually plan to fail.

Lets be go creative for some few minutes, imagine a plain drawing board and you have been giving colors to paint a beautiful drawing. What comes to  the mind to paint out is something beautiful, lovely to the eyes and desirable. We all can wish and want to paint a lovely piece of work, but a lot of things must been done before we can get a beautiful final result. The unwavering determination, unflinching focus, the carefully and purposefully well defined strokes all make up the lovely final piece.

This situation also applies to our health life, what and what plans, conditions, habits, choices are we putting in place to be healthy at all stages of lives.

Think deeply  THE CHOICE IS OURS.
